Aran Sweater Market, Galway
Winner of the 2018 Engineer’s Ireland Heritage and Conservation award
JWPM provided Project Management and PSDP services for this award winning renovation of a medieval building in the heart of the Latin Quarter in Galway City. The work was undertaken in 2 phases and involved the complete renovation and conservation of a cluster of derelict buildings at Quay Street, one of the main pedestrian streets in Galway. The buildings are protected structures and lie within the medieval core of Galway and an Architectural Conservation Area.
Some of the key challenges lay in the sequencing of the façade retention and the significant archaeological works which were overcome by initially installing the ground floor columns and first floor concrete slab to stabilise the façade and then undertaking the extensive archaeological dig. It was during these investigations that original walled sections of Galway’s oldest stone castle, built in 1232, were unearthed. Sections can still be seen in the shop today through a section of glass floor.
